Frequently Asked Questions

General Questions

What if a person has multiple devices?

Occuspace algorithms take into account people that may have several devices and maintains 90% accuracy.

Does it track individuals?

No, Occuspace doesn’t use or store any personally identifiable information and does not track specific people in any capacity.

How many sensors do I need for my space?

1 sensor for every 2,500 - 5,000 square feet of space depending on the layout.

How accurate is the data?

Occuspace maintains accuracy of 95% in any space we are in. We regularly send accuracy reports for you to verify this.

What are the building requirements of installation?

Sensors need access to power through a normal wall outlet and wifi. No special wiring or infrastructure changes are required.

What kind of spaces can I do?

Occuspace can do any type of space regardless of ceiling height, walkway size, or layout.

What do I need for an exact quote?

Send us your floorplan files (pdf with square footage of each floor, or CAD) and we can give an exact quote within 24 hours.

Device Questions

What is the Occuspace device?

A Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) and WiFi signal detection device with basic compute and network capabilities, encased in a plastic tamper proof case

How many devices are needed?

Approximately one device every 2k- 3k square feet depending on the layout of the space

What are the device requirements?
  • Power
    One 110V outlet plug
    *OR*
    Power over Ethernet (PoE)

  • WiFi connection (for non-PoE installations)
Connection to customer supplied WiFi is necessary to transmit data (PoE does not require WiFi as it uses an Ethernet connection to transmit data)
What functions does the device perform?
  • BLE & WiFi scans

  • Securely streams data to the Occuspace cloud infrastructure at AWS
What data is collected in scans?
  • Scans see unique Bluetooth and WiFi signals and their respective signal strengths (RSSI)

  • Devices do not collect any personally identifiable information

  • Devices do not connect to any Bluetooth or WiFi signals
How long does the collected data stay on the device?

Usually for 1-2 minutes under normal conditions, but could be up to 24 hours in the event that Internet connectivity to the Occuspace cloud is down. In that case the data is buffered for up to 24 hours on device to prevent gaps in data reporting

What data is sent from the devices?

The hashed, truncated, and salted MAC address value, its signal strength (RSSI) and a timestamp for each individual WiFi and Bluetooth signal detected

How much data do Occuspace devices collect?

Each device collects and sends approximately 1GB/month of data

How is the collected data sent to the Occuspace cloud infrastructure?

All data is transmitted securely and using an encrypted connection (under SSL)

Does the Occuspace device need people’s Bluetooth and WiFi to be turnedon? What if someone has no devices on them? What if someone has 5different devices?
  •  If someone has their Bluetooth and WiFi turned off we cannot see them

  • Our algorithms train themselves to the behavior of each location and adjust for abnormal behavior to stay within 95%+ accuracy even if some people have no devices or a high number of devices

  • We employ the use of truth set data in the form of customer supplied hand counts of their spaces during the initial setup phase. This allows us to train the space to accurately report occupancy data
Does Occuspace do regular security audits of the devices?

Yes, Occuspace does regular 3rd party pentesting on our devices. A pentesting report can be shared upon request

Privacy & Security Questions

Is the data Occuspace collects anonymous?

Yes. Occuspace scans for unique WiFi and Bluetooth signals using an associated identifier on each signal called a MAC address. A MAC address can be considered personally identifiable information (PII) in some situations. However Occuspace ensures that the MAC address value is immediately obfuscated and randomized into an identifier that is completely anonymous, and that is impossible to be connected back to any specific individual. The MAC ID itself is never stored in device memory as it is immediately and irreversibly hashed with a daily changing salt and truncated on the CPU at the point in time that it is detected. These hashed values are in the data stream sent to the cloud infrastructure. Occuspace does not use or store any non-hashed MAC address information on our devices or servers

How are MAC addresses protected?
  • All MAC addresses are irreversibly hashed with a daily changing salt and truncated immediately on the device CPU before being stored in memory

  • Our hashed values are half the memory size of a normal MAC address, making it impossible to reverse

  • The hash changes every day through a randomly generated daily salt
Is Occuspace GDPR compliant?

Yes, the Occuspace service is fully GDPR compliant. Occuspace data is completely anonymous and contains no personally identifiable information (PII). Occuspace does not connect to any consumer devices and cannot track individuals

What happens if a device gets stolen? Is the on-device data encrypted?
  • All on device data is hashed and encrypted on the device

  • Stolen or tampered with devices are replaced free of charge
How are the devices authenticated with your systems?

Devices have an API key that is based on hardware specific information. Devices use this key as a secret to sign messages using a keyed-hash message authentication code (HMAC-SHA256)

Installation Questions

What does the customer need to do prior to installation?
  • Provide WiFi credentials if device connectivity is provided via WiFi

  • Send CAD or other types of floor plan files of the desired install spaces
Do I need to share my WiFi password with Occuspace? What if our WiFi password changes?
  • Occuspace does need WiFi credentials prior to installation to make sure all devices can connect to the WiFi and transmit data if a non-PoE installation is desired

  • If your WiFi credentials change, please reach out to Occuspace before the change happens with the new information and there will be no lapse in service
What is the device installation process?

There are two options for installation:

1. Occuspace Professional Installation

The Occuspace team handles the entire installation and calibration process onsite.

2. Client Install

Occuspace sends the client a box of devices to be installed by the client team, following a guide sent by Occuspace based on floor plan files. Occuspace provides a full-suite of highly usable installation and monitoring tools available by
